Brush & Mask Tool

Extract subjects from backgrounds using the brush and mask tools.

1

Enter Brush Mode

The Brush button in the Add Layer grid

Click the Brush button in the left sidebar (under ADD LAYER) to enter Brush Extract mode. The right sidebar changes to show Brush Controls instead of the normal Inspector.

2

Brush Controls

Brush controls in the right sidebar

The right sidebar now shows:

Size — Brush size slider (larger = wider stroke)

Feather — Softness of brush edges (0 = hard, 100 = very soft)

Opacity — How opaque the brush stroke is

Nib Style — 6 different brush tip shapes

Invert — Invert the mask selection

3

Choose a Nib Style

Select from 6 brush nib styles:

Round — Standard circular brush (default)

Soft Round — Circular with feathered edges

Square — Hard-edged square brush

Flat — Flat/rectangular brush

Pen Nib — Bezier-based pen tool for precise paths

Spray — Scattered spray-paint effect

4

Paint the Mask

Click and drag on the canvas to paint. The painted area becomes the mask. What you paint is what will be kept (or removed if you use Invert). The mask is applied in real-time so you can see the result as you paint.

Use a large brush for big areas and a small brush for fine details around edges.

5

Adjust Feather

Increase the feather value for softer edges that blend naturally with the background. A feather of 20-40 usually looks best for hair and soft edges. Use 0 for hard, precise cutouts.

The feather slider applies to both the brush tool and the edge feathering of the extracted clip.

6

Invert the Mask

Click the Invert button to flip the selection. Everything you painted becomes transparent, and everything you did not paint becomes visible. Useful for removing a subject instead of keeping it.

You can toggle Invert on and off to preview both results.

7

Apply and Exit

When satisfied with the mask, click Apply in the Brush Controls. This creates a new layer with the masked content and exits Brush mode. The original clip remains on the timeline.

The extracted layer appears as a new clip above the original.

8

Pen Tool (Bezier Paths)

Select the Pen Nib style to use the pen tool. Click to place anchor points. Click and drag to create curved bezier segments. Close the path by clicking the first point or double-clicking. The enclosed area becomes the mask.
